On January 12th local time, US President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social stating that, effective immediately and without any possibility of reversal, a 25% tariff will be imposed on any country that engages in commercial transactions with the Islamic Republic of Iran for all their trade activities with the United States.
Trump emphasized that the decision is "final and irrevocable". He did not provide any specific elaboration on the matter via social media. As of press time, the White House had not issued any official documents regarding this decision.
Due to the long-standing harsh sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran, the two countries have no commercial exchanges or formal diplomatic relations, leaving the US unable to exert direct and effective pressure on Iran through tariff measures.
The Financial Times reported on the 12th that the US tariff measures, which took effect immediately, may impact a number of countries including China and India. Data shows that besides China, Iran's largest trading partner, India, Turkey, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Brazil and Iraq are all among Iran's major trading partners. Russia also signed a new free trade agreement with Iran in 2025 to boost the scale of bilateral trade.
Citing statistics from customs data collection agencies, the report pointed out that in the first half of 2025, more than 100 countries around the world had trade ties with Iran to varying degrees, and all these countries may be affected by the current tariff policy. Nevertheless, constrained by the severe sanctions imposed by the US on Iran, commercial links between Iran and many countries have already shrunk drastically.
CNN also pointed out that Trump's statement implies that for China, which is a major trading partner of both Iran and the United States, the import costs of its goods exported to the US may "rise sharply".
The White House: Diplomacy is the Preferred Option
According to CCTV News, White House Press Secretary Levitt stated on the 12th that in response to the current situation with Iran, Trump believes that diplomacy is the "preferred" approach.
Levitt said that Trump "has always emphasized that diplomacy is the top priority", but he "will not hesitate to deploy US military forces" if he deems it necessary.
Trump stated on the 11th that Iran has contacted US government officials and proposed negotiations, adding that "meetings are being arranged". Meanwhile, the US is considering a series of measures to address the Iranian situation, including "some very tough options" such as military actions.
Iran: Fully Prepared for War
On January 12th local time, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi held a press conference regarding the recent situation in Iran.
Araghchi stated that since December 28, 2025, peaceful demonstrations organized by industry associations and economic figures have taken place in Iran. In the following days, new groups of people joined the demonstrations, and the peaceful activities evolved into violent conflicts.
However, starting from January 8th, terrorists and armed gangs began to enter the sites of public demonstrations carrying weapons and opened fire on both police officers and civilians, aiming to turn the demonstrations into violence, bloodshed and chaos. Araghchi emphasized that Iran has obtained a large number of documents and evidence indicating that the United States and Israel were involved in these terrorist attacks.
In response to the military threats from the US and Israel, Araghchi stressed that Iran does not seek war, but it is fully prepared to respond to it. At the same time, Iran is also ready to hold serious and pragmatic negotiations with the United States, but such negotiations must be based on fairness, equality and mutual respect, rather than following the US's "orders".
